My Best Hack For Fear of Failure 🏆

I'm working on a lot of new projects at the moment. All at the same time. All with a potential for big success.

But that can be overwhelming can't it? When you have lots of plates spinning, the fear is that you drop them all.

So, here is how I handle that.

I imagine every single way that things could go wrong. Every failure I could make. Every mistake. Every single way I could embarrass myself and ruin everything.

And I write a list. I write them all down and look at them. I face my fears.

Then I say to myself, "Even if every single one of these happens, I'll be okay." Because lots of bad things have happened in the past, right? But I am okay now. I am always okay.

Then I make notes next to every error and I ask myself, "If that happened, what would I do next?"

This way, I've done three helpful things:

  1. I have stopped myself ruminating by getting the thoughts down on paper.
  2. I have given myself real things to focus my attention on, instead of having spinning, catastrophic thoughts.
  3. I have pre-primed myself to react to every possible scenario.

Which means, I am ready for everything.

Have a great week, Stephen

How are you feeling? Bit tired? Ready for a break? I hope you are going to get one soon. I am. At the end of this week I take a break until the New Year. And that's the time when, typically, our minds start to turn to big goals and ambitions. But before we get to 2026, we have this unusual, liminal...

If your “what-if” is still alive after a year, it’s not going away. That itch in the back of your mind that this isn't it. Persistent thoughts are clues, not distractions. Explore them before they turn into regret. Do you want to wait another year? 2026 is just around the corner. Or are you ready to change? Have you heard of something called the Region Beta Paradox? Chris Williamson says it's when: “…things are not bad enough to be bad, but not good enough to be good… all of these people would be better off if their situations were worse. It would kick them out the bottom.” In other words, it's a psychological trap. The job that’s fine. The relationship that’s okay. The habits that aren’t wrecking you, but aren’t serving you either. Ironically, you’d sometimes be better off if things were worse....
