The Mirror Doesn't Move First, You Do

For all I know this phrase is a cheesy meme that's reached 100 trillion views on Tickstogram, but I don't care. I love it.

If you don't like how things are for you right now, remember this:

The mirror doesn't smile first. You smile and the mirror follows in a little while.

Or to look at it another way, you act, and the consequences of that action are reflected back to you.

So stop waiting for a sign. Stop waiting for a gift. Do something.

You may not see the results right away. But if you never make a move, your reflection will always be the same.

Smile. Make that call. Dress up. Do your hair. Ask for help. Make a decision. Go for a walk. Whatever feels like the action you want to take right now.

Just. Take. Action.

And watch the person in the mirror change.

Have a lovely day, Stephen

Managing energy is one of my super skills. I am really good at calibrating the amount of energy to expend across a range of tasks so that I can keep going. When we exercise, our heart rate...

I need to be really honest with you. Don't listen to me when it comes to nutrition. Seriously, if the Gods centred me in the story of Achilles, it wouldn't be an arrow to the heal that got me, it would be a cinnamon bun in the cakehole. Of all the areas of personal and professional improvement I have tried to master, this is the one I have succeeded at the least. I eat what I shouldn't when I am tired, stressed, bored or distracted. Then I feel guilty, which makes me want to eat potatoes, fat...

Ready for my next series of life hacks? Today we are talking about movement. I chose that word intentionally. I could have picked "exercise" but that wouldn't have captured what I have learned. Let's start with something basic. Almost everyone reading this will be an office worker of some kind. Which means, you probably spend a good deal of your time sedentary. Which means, however much movement you currently do, you probably should be doing more. I say that as someone who is relatively fit...
