George Mack has this question I'm obsessed with. Here's my version of it. Imagine you find yourself in a third world prison. Nobody knows where you are or how you got there. But it is horrible and you are stuck. You are given your phone, briefly, to make a single phone call. All you will have time to say is, "Help, I am in a Los Hell Hole prison. You are the only person who knows. Get me out." Before the guards take it off you. Who do you call? That, dear reader, is the most high agency person you know. Here are some of the people you don't want to call: The Clear Thinker Without Action: The Action-Taker Without Clarity: The Agreeable Conformer: The Passive Complainer: The People-Pleaser: The Stereotype Follower: The Groupthink Victim: The Prestige Prisoner: The Non-Verifier: The Knowledge Hoarder: Which of these behaviours annoys you the most btw? For me it's the passive complainer. Oh my days. Anyways... When you're stuck in a third world prison, you need people who act without waiting for permission. People who think clearly, act decisively, bend rules quietly, and don't care who they upset. People who make things happen. Now, the truth is, most of us are neither high- nor low-agency people. We behave in different ways depending on how we are feeling and the circumstances we are in. But it is possible to train yourself to have more agency, more of the time. And so, that's the topic for this week. And on Friday, I'll be giving a talk at 12pm (UK) on the topic of How to Have High Agency to a lovely group of my clients. If you sign up for the free trial of HeRO Academy, you can be there too. What would a high agency person do? Stephen |

What's the point of a newsletter like this? Don't unsubscribe yet!! There is a point, I promise... From my perspective, HeRO Newsletter is about sharing something I am passionate about: tips and ideas for personal and professional development. And I know that the majority of people like you read the majority of my messages. Because Kit, the platform I used, tells me. So clearly this is something you are interested in. But how do you actually benefit from what you read? I am going to tell...
On Wednesday I wrote a post about running a network where I had authority but not control. Thanks to G, who replied and asked me how you know you have authority. Great question G. Thank you. Let's look at this the other way around first. Have you ever seen an example of someone who, in theory, has power, but nobody pays attention to them? You sometimes hear about managers of sports teams who have lost the dressing room. By the way, I know how that feels. I've had periods of my career when all...
Have you heard the phrase "cultural intelligence" before? If you Google it you'll get a load of frameworks and definitions and training courses. There seems to be a bit of money in it. And it can seem a bit overwhelming. But at a basic level it just means, can you sense what's going on in your team, division, organisation...? Some of us do this more naturally than others of course. And some of us think we're good at it when we're not. If you ever hear anyone saying confidently that they know...
