This week was budget week in the UK and everyone has an opinion about it. Personally, I don't think I am qualified to understand it or the longer term implications. But, one thing is really clear. In the UK, productivity has been flat for years, while at the same time, burnout is increasing. Both of these things are clear from reputable statistics authorities, not just that bloke from the pub with a pint of bitterness. I hear about both of these things all the time in my coaching. Organisations struggling to grow in a sluggish economy. Managers dealing with their own (and other's) mental health struggles. There are many ways coaching can help with this, and I can't summarise them all in a short email. But, here's one piece of advice that always helps:
Which might seem like an odd piece of advice, right? If you have burnout and low productivity today, surely we need a today solution!? The truth is that if you don't have a very clear direction, it is really difficult to put things in perspective. If you have no perspective, it is hard to know what decisions to make and it is hard to know what to give attention to. And so, unless there is a burning issue in the moment, I usually help my clients think about the future first. When we return to the present, everything feels better. Nobody is motivated on a cold February morning. But people who commit to consistency will get up, whatever their mood or weather, and do whatever it is that they need to do. And, as a result, eventually their efforts will compound. And so, this is one of the "rules" I run my business by. It isn't reasonable to...
I was talking to a client yesterday. They are putting on an event for the first time. And a bit nervous about it. In the course of the conversation I mentioned I was "going live on LinkedIn" later in the day. You can see the 15-minute recording if you are interested: Gen X Leaders: Why it is so Hard Right Now. My client asked if I was nervous like her. And I realised that, not only was I not nervous, I was barely thinking about it. Despite the possibility that hundreds of people might see me...
I got a wonderful message from my client Chris yesterday: Chris became a client of mine almost a year ago, but we really started to work together properly in February. He's already a brilliant entrepreneur who had built a successful business. And he knows how to make money out of it. But, that comes with lots of challenges. How to manage a team. How to keep yourself motivated. How to keep reinventing yourself. How to keep improving. How to juggle everything. How to deal with stress. I could...
