I promised you some sleep hacks today. Here are my top 3 as tried and tested over the years:
To be honest, if you are still doing it, number 3 should be number 1. I've just done this one for so long now that I take it for granted. If your phone is in your room, you are not getting the best sleep you could. Full stop. There are loads of reasons for this to do with screens and light and stimulation and more. But here's the most powerful one. If your phone is in your room, even if it is switched off, part of your brain will always be wondering, "have I got a message ... have I got a message ..." and so you don't fully relax. So, get yourself an alarm clock and leave your phone in the kitchen. Once you have done that, actually, if you are getting your alarm clock from an online shop, while you are doing that, buy yourself a sleep mask. I have one that cost about £15 off-of Bezos's emporium of plastic delights. It's amazing. Blocks out all of the light and stops you being disturbed. Except for that one time I forgot I was wearing it and couldn't find my way to the bathroom. Finally, you can't bank sleep. Your body thanks you for getting a full quota consistently. You also can't catch-up on the weekend. But life isn't always consistent, so you might not always get to bed at the same time. And so, the best compromise is to always get up at roughly the same time which keeps your circadian rhythm about right. There's a lot to be said for getting up at 6:30 on a Sunday and heading to the gym -- don't knock it until you've tried it. How do I know all this? From lots of research, testing and refining different things and measuring the results with my Whoop. They may not all work for you, but they are a good place to start. See you tomorrow for more life hacks relating to "Movement". In the meantime, what do you think about these sleep hacks? Have you noticed the trend in modern social media for people to declare the "one thing" that "changes everything"? It might be that eating lard (sounds better if you say "beef tallow" doesn't it) cures all physical ailments. Or a particular breathwork protocol rewires your ADHD. Or a new AI tool will transform your productivity. Thing is, the one thing never quite lives up to the promise does it? It might not actually be snake oil (or cow fat) but it can't possibly cure all ills. That should...
Imagine a time in the future when you've achieved whatever it is you dream of achieving. Then ask yourself, what would that enable you to do? What would you spend more of your time doing? Would you exercise more? Spend more time with friends or family? Or something else? Then, ask yourself, what's stopping you doing more of that today? Perhaps not the dream version on the sunny beach. But a real version, on a park bench. You shouldn't wait to spend your time doing the things you enjoy, just...
