In the 1980s I worked as a milkman in Bedale, North Yorkshire. I absolutely loved doing that. Up early, getting some exercise, earning some money and then ... going to school! That's right, I worked 5-6 days a week from 5am in my school uniform before getting dropped off at the school gates in time for class. Can't imagine my kids doing that. Would it even be legal? Anyway, I was telling my daughter (she's 16) about this yesterday and I also told her how birds used to steal the cream off the milk when it was cold. They'd peck the little foil tops off and have a sip. From what I remember, that didn't stop my mum from using the milk. I'll have to ask her. Food hygiene wasn't invented until about 1992 though was it? Health and safety was a few years after that. It's amazing we survived. But then my dad has some hair raising stories about second world war bullets and train tracks behind his house. So his generation probably thought we were soft. Anyway, I'm only telling you all this because I'm quite enjoying a bit of Gen X nostalgia at the moment while I prepare for this. What do you remember from your teenage years that seems crazy now? For people who want regular personal or professional development advice from a qualified executive coach.

In the UK, productivity has been flat for years, while at the same time, burnout is increasing. Both of these things are clear from reputable statistics authorities, not just that bloke from the pub with a pint of bitterness. I hear about both of these things all the time in my coaching....
Consistency compounds is a very well worn phrase in personal-development-land. And there's good reason for it. If you want results at anything over time, don't rely on motivation. Nobody is motivated on a cold February morning. But people who commit to consistency will get up, whatever their mood or weather, and do whatever it is that they need to do. And, as a result, eventually their efforts will compound. And so, this is one of the "rules" I run my business by. It isn't reasonable to...
I was talking to a client yesterday. They are putting on an event for the first time. And a bit nervous about it. In the course of the conversation I mentioned I was "going live on LinkedIn" later in the day. You can see the 15-minute recording if you are interested: Gen X Leaders: Why it is so Hard Right Now. My client asked if I was nervous like her. And I realised that, not only was I not nervous, I was barely thinking about it. Despite the possibility that hundreds of people might see me...
