I'm Excited And Other Stories

I'm excited because it is exactly one week until my big online event. I hope you can come.

But as I prepare for that, I thought it might help to share a technique I use for working on projects like this. I call it backwards planning. And it is one of the many things I teach in my HeRO Program.

So, let's set the scene first. I have a wide range of different things to do in the next week. I have my normal job, with clients, finances, admin, sales calls and so on. I also have a busy family life. But just for my event I need to:

  • market it
  • generate anticipation
  • prepare the talk
  • test the technology
  • build links and offers
  • etc

It would be easy to get overwhelmed. So this is what I do, I start with the end and I work back from that.

I picture closing the Zoom call with the sense that it went brilliantly. Then I ask myself:

  • What needed to happen in the last 5 minutes to make it feel like that?
  • What needed to happen in the rest of the talk?
  • What needed to happen, just before it started?
  • On the morning of the event?
  • The night before?
  • The three days before that?
  • And so on, until I get back to today.

This has the effect of making it feel like every single thing I am doing is leading towards a very specific feeling which can only happen with a successful outcome.

Which, in turn, makes all of the nuts and bolts work feel more meaningful.

Hope you found this useful. I'm getting back to my work. Coz it's exciting.

Have a great day, Stephen

This week was budget week in the UK and everyone has an opinion about it. Personally, I don't think I am qualified to understand it or the longer term implications. But, one thing is really clear. In the UK, productivity has been flat for years, while at the same time, burnout is increasing. Both of these things are clear from reputable statistics authorities, not just that bloke from the pub with a pint of bitterness. I hear about both of these things all the time in my coaching....

Consistency compounds is a very well worn phrase in personal-development-land. And there's good reason for it. If you want results at anything over time, don't rely on motivation. Nobody is motivated on a cold February morning. But people who commit to consistency will get up, whatever their mood or weather, and do whatever it is that they need to do. And, as a result, eventually their efforts will compound. And so, this is one of the "rules" I run my business by. It isn't reasonable to...

I was talking to a client yesterday. They are putting on an event for the first time. And a bit nervous about it. In the course of the conversation I mentioned I was "going live on LinkedIn" later in the day. You can see the 15-minute recording if you are interested: Gen X Leaders: Why it is so Hard Right Now. My client asked if I was nervous like her. And I realised that, not only was I not nervous, I was barely thinking about it. Despite the possibility that hundreds of people might see me...
