Coaching is always led by goals. The role of the coach is to help the client to articulate what they need or want clearly and then work towards achieving that. Which is fine if the client knows what they want. But when you are unhappy, it is often hard to figure out what would make you happy. Our brains tend to repeat patterns. So, if you are feeling a bit negative, you tend to see the negative in everything. Which, in turn, makes it hard to figure out what you really need to do to make things better. And so, we go for short term fixes, like an extra glass of wine, some doom-scrolling or compulsive shopping. Or, we bounce from one project to another hoping we'll find what is missing. None of which helps us to really figure out the big stuff. The shifts that would really bring us renewed fulfilment. I know because I have been there. For years and years and years if I am honest. But not anymore. With the help of a coach I cracked the code for my life and have never looked back since. Now I help people to do the same, but in a much more structured way. I reverse engineered and refined the process I worked through and turned it into my coaching program. And here's the place where I get everyone to start. It isn't with goals at all. It is with self-understanding. So, if you want to take the first steps, here's the questions you should spend some time on:
If you can spend some time reflecting on these things (a few days or weeks), you'll start to see what is really important to you. And if you can do that, you'll have a better chance of setting some really great goals. Hope you found this useful. If so, why not send it to someone who needs to see it? I'm writing this at 6pm on a Sunday. I've just finished a few hours work, alone in my office. Well, I made the cleaner jump at one point, but other than that, undisturbed. I got to see my stepson play football this morning and had a run with my wife. But lunch was at my desk. Focus drinks and protein shakes are scattered around. And now I am writing this. I don't do this every week. But, like most people growing a business, there's no real 9-5. Tomorrow will be a 12 hour day. Tuesday has a...
Don't get worried. Not that kind of addict. I am completely and totally addicted to self-improvement podcasts (and books). If I'm honest I've been like that most of my life. Back in my twenties I remember consuming The Road Less Travelled and Zen And The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance in a particularly deep week. BTW I still read Zen ... every couple of years. Would recommend. These days every drive I take is to the sound of Alex Hormozi or Steven Bartlett or my current personal favourite...
Do you understand what drives you emotionally? I mean the life-long coding that creates the way you to respond to things. Most of us don't. We behave in way we've always behaved and we don't question it. There is a theory that we develop these patterns in childhood as we learn to adapt to our environment. And then we keep going. This adaptation is really powerful. It gives us many of the skills that help us to navigate life. But they also have a shadow side. In our blind spot our adaptations...
