I had a moment of clarity recently. Something that made me see something hiding in plain sight. You see, for the last couple of years, in my personal development coaching, I have been helping people in "the middle part of life". That's the best phrase I have managed to come up with to describe the kinds of people I help. But it is a bit of a nothing phrase isn't it? What does it actually mean? But then I spotted something about the majority of my clients. They are almost all Gen Xers. Which means that they were born roughly between 1965-1980. Like me: 1973 since you asked. I know, I look younger 😉 The reason Gen X is called Invisible is because it is sandwiched between the much larger Baby Boomers and the much more talked about Millennials. What's more, right now Gen X are the load carriers. Their kids still need them. Their parents need support. They carry a huge load in the workplace. Everyone turns to them. It's exhausting. And so, for the next couple of weeks, I am going to write about this issue in the hope I can help. So, if you know any Gen Xers who need a boost, get them to sign up here. Tomorrow I will share something brand new that they won't want to miss. For people who want regular personal or professional development advice from a qualified executive coach.
This week was budget week in the UK and everyone has an opinion about it. Personally, I don't think I am qualified to understand it or the longer term implications. But, one thing is really clear. In the UK, productivity has been flat for years, while at the same time, burnout is increasing. Both of these things are clear from reputable statistics authorities, not just that bloke from the pub with a pint of bitterness. I hear about both of these things all the time in my coaching....
Consistency compounds is a very well worn phrase in personal-development-land. And there's good reason for it. If you want results at anything over time, don't rely on motivation. Nobody is motivated on a cold February morning. But people who commit to consistency will get up, whatever their mood or weather, and do whatever it is that they need to do. And, as a result, eventually their efforts will compound. And so, this is one of the "rules" I run my business by. It isn't reasonable to...
I was talking to a client yesterday. They are putting on an event for the first time. And a bit nervous about it. In the course of the conversation I mentioned I was "going live on LinkedIn" later in the day. You can see the 15-minute recording if you are interested: Gen X Leaders: Why it is so Hard Right Now. My client asked if I was nervous like her. And I realised that, not only was I not nervous, I was barely thinking about it. Despite the possibility that hundreds of people might see me...
